November 18, 2006 - The San Diego Padres Vice President/Scouting and Player development announced Monday that former major league infielder Randy Ready will manage the San Antonio Missions for the 2007 season. Ready will be joined in San Antonio by pitching coach Glenn Abbott, hitting coach Arnie Beyler, and athletic trainer Greg Harrel.
Randy Ready played 13 years in the big leagues with five different clubs. Ready was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 6th round of the 1980 draft and made his MLB debut for the Brewers in 1983. He played in Milwaukee till 1986 before being traded mid-season to the San Diego Padres. Ready then moved on to the Philadelphia Phillies from 1989 – 91 and then to the Oakland Athletics in 1992 and the Montreal Expos in 1993 before finishing his career with Phillies in 1994 – 95.
Ready began his managerial career in Detroit’s minor league system as the Short-A affiliate in Oneonta in 2002-2003. In 2002, he led Oneonta to a 47-27 first place finish and was named the New York – Penn League Manager of the Year. In 2003, the team went 45-30 and was a play-off qualifier. Ready then joined the Padres Organization and managed the Single-A Fort Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League for the next three seasons. In 2004, the Wizards were 72-68 and qualified for the Midwest League play-offs before being defeated in the first round. The Wizards in 2005 finished with an overall record of 65-75 and were defeated in the first round of the play-offs. Last season Ready led the Wizards to a 71-66 record before losing in the 1st round of the play-offs. Over five seasons as a manager Ready has amassed a 300-261 record and .535 winning percentage.
The Missions new pitching coach, Glenn Abbott, pitched 11 seasons in his Major League Career with Oakland (1973-76), Seattle (1977-83), and Detroit (1983-84). His career record in the big leagues was 62-83 with a lifetime ERA of 4.39. Abbott participated in the Major League’s first four-pitcher no-hitter on September 28, 1975, as he combined with Vida Blue, Paul Linbald and Rollie Fingers to no hit the Angels. Abbott made his coaching debut in the Texas League in Midland for the 1999 season as part of Oakland’s farm system. Abbott then served as pitching coach for the Modesto A’s in the California League from 2000-02. Abbott then joined the Texas Rangers system in 2003, where he served as the pitching coach for the Triple-A Oklahoma Redhawks till 2004 and served as their Single-A pitching coach in Spokane in 2005. Abbott is in his second season in the Padres organization as he spent last season as the Double-A pitching coach in Mobile.
Arnie Beyeler joins Ready’s staff in his second season as the hitting coach for the Padres Double-A club. Beyeler played six seasons of professional baseball in the Detroit Tigers system reaching the Triple-A level in his final season in 1991. From 1992-1996, Beyeler was a Florida Area Scout for the Detroit Tigers system. Beyeler then spent three seasons as a hitting coach in New York Yankees organization from 1997-1999 before becoming a manager in the Boston Red Sox organization in the New York Penn league in 2000-01 and the South Atlantic League in 2002. In 2003, Beyeler joined the Texas Rangers organization where he managed their California League affiliate (Single-A) for three seasons.
Greg Harrel will return for his second season to the Padres Double-A affiliate as the Athletic Trainer for the Missions. Harrel spent the 2004 season as the Athletic Trainer for the Florida Marlins Triple-A club and the previous 18 seasons in the Texas Rangers farm system. 2007 will mark Harrel’s 21st season in professional baseball.
